Through different types of language and opinions food related articles and recipes can help a person to decide whether to eat a type of food, depending on their opinions on the article. For example an article may say that being a vegetarian is the ideal choice because it is better for the environment, and that living of a meat free diet will be better for you because with a vegetarian diet you are getting all the nutrients you need without consuming another living mammal. In this assignment I will compare two different articles one being a recipe and write about how they persuade people to eat or not eat a particular type of food.
Text eight which is an recipe from a cook book written by television chef named Yvonne, is written in a style which would be found in an old eighties style cookbook and this is shown by the color of the paper the article is printed on, the font used and the layout of the text. The author’s choice of words help describe exactly what to do in the recipe in order to prepare and cook the dish ‘Beef Stroganoff’, by using simple worded instructions on how to prepare certain ingredients of the dish. For example the line ‘Pop in the mushrooms and sage and fry gently for one minute’, this simple sentence instructs the reader to place the mushrooms and herb into the pan and to fry cook it gently for a single minute. This sentence is simple because it does not use complicated language and so is easy to understand, and does not require reading twice to understand.
The recipe uses figurative language to help get the idea across to the reader about how to prepare food without going into specific detail, and this is found in the sentence ‘one clove of garlic should be stronganoff’. This sentence is telling the reader that one clove of garlic is enough for the entire recipe as the vegetable is a strong ingredient. A pun is also used in the sentence to inject humour into the recipe to entertain the reader as they prepare the meal.
The grammar of the article helps the reader follow the text easily, so that they can prepare the dish in question easily without having to re-read every sentence over and over again. For example the article uses short sentences to make it easier to read, and one example of this is the life ‘Finally, remove from the heat and stir in the soured cream’. In this single sentence the reader has been instructed to take the food of the stoves heat, and to stir in the ingredient the soured cream.
In the article the form of the article is the recipe and how the instructions of the recipe lead to the creation of the finished product, in this case the Beef Stroganoff. The structure of the article is that the recipe is written in a clear structured format which is found in many magazine recipes and those in cookery books. The article is put together in the format of those found in a magazine so that it is catching to the eye and is easy to understand. There are a number of different steps in the article which are highlighted with bullet points which help organise them, and to make them stand out from each other.
The article’s layout and presentation is that of a simple recipe which is written in an olden day style, possibly from the 1980s. For example the paper used to print the recipe is brown and uses a hand written type of font, which is classical in olden day recipes. There are also images relating to the article and its product included in the recipe which helps make the article stand out to the reader, and helps show the reader/audience what the dish is meant to look like at the end of preparation and cooking. There is also an image of a ‘cook’ who has prepared the recipe, which will help the reader think that the dish must be of great quality because it was created by a well-known chef, who is portrayed by an actress. There is also a picture of the food preparation product Bisto gravy granules. This helps promote the product by using it in the production of the product, and will make the audience/reader think that the dish will have a taste to a high standard because a popular product is used in the preparation of the product.
Attitudes conveyed towards the food in the article is that the food is ‘marvellous’ and superlative words such as ‘magnificent’ are used. This is seen at the start and end of the article. One example of when the food is called ‘magnificent’ is the final sentence of the article. ‘Gently heat through and serve on a bed of rice with vegetables of your choice. Magnifique’. This helps show that the dish is delicious and a French word is used to help the reader feel that this is a dish the French would adore, and people know how much the French love food. It also tells the reader/audience that it will taste great with the rice and vegetables, and the chef is also stating that her dish is one of the best.
There is no date on the article/recipe but from its appearance it may have been written in the early 1980s.
Text eleven which is a screenshot from an online website called the ‘Vegetarian Society’, is written in the style of a pamphlet in that the information is written in bullet points to help the relevant information stand out to the reader. The webpage is written in a traditional webpage format with a header with different click on links which lead to different parts of the website, and there are images which relate to the subject of the page. The author’s choice of words help to carefully instruct the reader on how to become a vegetarian, and to tell them about the benefits of being a vegetarian compared to living off a meat diet. For example one sentence which shows the author’s simple use of language is ‘Learn about nutrition. A healthy vegetarian isn’t difficult, but if you’ve grown up eating meat, you will have to change some of your habits and the easiest way to stay healthy is to understand what your body needs’. This simply written sentence tells the reader about how to look after themselves while being a vegetarian, and how to ensure they stick to their choice of being a non-meat eater. This sentence is complex, but is easy to read. This sentence is also simple because it does not use complicated language and so is easy to understand and to follow the instructions.
The website page uses figurative language in the aid to help get the information about being a vegetarian across to the reader, without going into to many details which will confuse the reader or be irrelevant to the text. This is seen in such sentences as ‘buy a vegetarian cookbook (or borrow one from your local library). This is a imperitive yet simple sentence which instructs the audience/reader to purchase a cook book or borrow one from their local library which will contain vegetable recipes and no meat ones.
The grammar of the article makes it easy to follow, so that the reader can understand the text without having to read over and over again the information given on the webpage. For example the information is set into small paragraphs which are bullet pointed or numbered to make them easier to read. For example the second paragraph which contains information on how to cope with being a vegetarian is written like this:
2. Don’t be put off by a bit of teasing or ill-formed scare stories. Vegetarians are sometimes the brunt of jokes and prejudices, usually from people who know very little about their own health and dietary needs. By writing the information like this the reader will be able to understand what the text is trying to tell them easily, and will be able to point out the most important parts. Seven bullet points have been included to give the reader more information on what they need to ignore when it comes to reverting to vegetarianism.
The form of the webpage is the information given about vegetarianism, and how to live a healthy lifestyle while being a vegetarian. The structure of the webpage is that the information is written in small paragraphs which are bullet pointed, which is usually found in health pamphlets. By doing this the reader will know that the information is written by health professionals and that the information can be trusted and is factual. There are a number of different points in the article which help show this, such as the sentence: ‘Learn a little about nutrition. A healthy vegetarian diet isn’t difficult’. This helps show that the person wishing to become a vegetarian must learn about nutrition in order to ensure they are consuming the right foods when they revert to vegetarianism.
The webpage’s layout and presentation is similar to that of a health care pamphlet you would find in a clinic or dietary consultation room. For example as I have stated about the webpage is printed with the information listed in bullet-points to help the information stand out, and to make it easier to read just like a pamphlet. Also there are images included in the webpage, one of them being a photo of musician and famous celebrity Sir Paul McCartney. McCartney tells the reader in his section that he is a devote vegetarian, because he believes not eating meat is better for you and the planet. Have the famous celebrity on the webpage also makes the reader feel that being a vegetarian is a very attractive and positive lifestyle because a famous celebrity follows this life and dietary style. There is also a image of a young woman who says she gave up meat at a young age, and the image shows that the woman is healthy and happy. This will tell the reader that her diet and lifestyle are better than a meat eaters, because she is eating only vegetables which are full of vitamins and minerals which are good for your health.
The attitudes conveyed in this webpage are that being a vegetarian is better for you, and is an easy dietary lifestyle to follow because you can adapt your lifestyle around it and do not have to change how you eat with the exception that you have to give up meat. One example of the webpage saying that the vegetarian lifestyle is the better choice is through the words of Sir Paul McCartney. He says: ‘What could be better than enjoying great tasting food that is not only good for your health, but also far better for the planet and the creatures that live with us upon it?’. This tells us that by living as a vegetarian you are looking after your health, and preventing the slaughter of innocent animals for food, seeing them as equals to humans.
The text may have been produced in early 2011.
Between the two texts there are 2 similarities and two differences between them each. First I will write about the two similarities:
v The recipe article talks about the meat dish as ‘magnificent’ stating that when meat is eaten it can be classed as delicious, and appetizing. Also there is a image of the finished product where the meat (beef) is visible and it appears to be filling and appetizing, which will help make the reader of the recipe want to taste the meat. Meat often has a very heavy build making it chewy and enjoyable to chew, unlike vegetables which feel soft and mushy when you chew them (when they are cooked).
v The second article shows two people who are devote vegetarians and shows them in brimming and perfect health, which the other article does not show. Many people believe that people who eat meat are healthier than those who do not, but the two images of the two people who are included on the webpage show that these two people including Music legend Sir Paul McCartney are brimming with health, youth and healthy skin.
The differences between these two texts include:
v The first article which is the recipe is laid out as if an amateur prepared the recipe article. I say this because if you look at the images they are just placed anywhere on the page, which makes it look unprofessional as if someone made the recipe article in a hurry, or did not care about the appearance of their work.
v The website page however is set out very professional as it has its different sections placed neatly in interactive rows, the information is in small, bullet-pointed paragraphs which are relevant to the subject of the text, and the images included on the page are placed neatly at the side of the page in a column , which makes them appear very neat and professional.
In conclusion different texts persuade a reader to eat or not eat a particular type of food, through imager, word choice and facts which can help encourage a person to think about their lifestyle and give them reasons on why they should change it.
