Little Grey Rabbit
The ‘Little Grey Rabbit’ text is a poem written by a well-known author, which tells the story of a young grey rabbit and her friends, and how she prepares a pancake each for everyone. The purpose of the text is to entertain the children reading it, while teaching them how a pancake is cooked. Pancakes are a favourite food of children, especially on ‘Pancake day’ so the author has decided to write about how a pancake is made, while using animals to help entertain the reader.
This text has been taken from a series of books written by the author, from her children’s series ‘The Little Grey Rabbit’.
The genre of this text is fiction as it is a story created from the author’s imagination. To me this text is similar to that of author Beatrix Potter, who wrote about animals preparing food such as jams from the berries which grew around their homes. Peter Rabbit’s mother is a good example of this, as she makes pies and cakes for her children, and she is herself a rabbit.
The intended audience is young children, possibly those ranging from the ages of 5-10.
This text relates to the topic of food in that the main subject of the story is a ‘pancake’ and how it’s prepared. Other themes and topics which relate to this text include how friends interact with each other, and how animals eat. For example there is a part in the text where the Fox tosses the pancake he is cooking to high, and it goes over the hedge. We find out how this animal eats through this sentence: ‘The fox caught it and ran swiftly to a sheltered spot to eat it’. This shows the exact same manner in which a fox in the wild would catch its food, possibly a small rodent and then retire to a sheltered area to eat.
One difference this text has to other texts in the anthology is that this poem is child friendly, unlike other texts such as the butcher shop text, which portrays animals as food. This text (Little Grey Rabbit) portrays animals almost like humans, and has them preparing food themselves, rather than being prepared as food themselves.
